net.ipv4.tcp_mtu_probing is a Linux kernel sysctl parameter that controls Packetization-Layer Path MTU Discovery (PLPMTUD). It detects and resolves network packet drops caused by "ICMP black holes" (where routers drop oversized packets but fail to send an error message back to the sender).The parameter accepts three values:
0: Disabled by default. It relies purely on traditional Path MTU Discovery.
1: Enabled only when an ICMP black hole is detected. This is often the recommended baseline for servers with larger MTU or Jumbo Frame setups.
2: Always enabled. TCP starts with a smaller base Maximum Segment Size (MSS) and probes to find the largest path MTU.
